The 250 might be underpowered for a big rider in the mountains. Both bikes can be made to work well with some suspension and motor mods, but the 300 is the preferred choice. The KLR250 has a rear drum brake vs the Sherpa rear disc. The KLR250 has screw adjust valves and the Sherpa shim adjust. The KLR250 has analog speedo, tach, & temp gauges vs LCD digital speedo, odo, clock, and dual trip meters on the Sherpa. I'm 6ft 180lbs and both bikes are comfortable to ride but the Sherpa is smaller. The KLX®230 S features a shorter, two-stage front suspension with 6.2 inches of travel. The front forks are shorter, and work with shorter dual-stage springs with a firmer spring rate. Combined with reduced rear suspension travel (6.6 inches), this helps lower the seat height by 2.2 inches. Both produce about the same power, but differently. DRZ is down low, KLX is up high. DRZ runs out of puff up high, but the KLX just keeps on revving. This will make them suitable for different conditions. DRZ better in hills and rocks. KLX better in sand.
